PHOENIX — Congressman Greg Stanton delivered the following remarks to a packed crowd of Arizona Democrats in Phoenix after winning a fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Arizona’s Fourth Congressional District and defeating his Republican opponent by an overwhelming majority:
“Good evening, Arizona! Who’s proud to be an Arizona Democrat? Who’s excited to win tonight? Who’s ready to tell Donald Trump his crusade of chaos, cruelty, and corruption comes to an end TONIGHT?!
I know we’re still waiting on some races to be called, but I want to first say thank you for sending me back to Congress!
I love this community, and I’m honored that you’ve put your trust in me again.
When it comes to Arizona, I never back down from a fight. I will always stand up for what I believe, for our shared values. And I will work with whomever it takes to get results and to deliver for you, for our seniors and veterans, and for the Arizona we believe in. And I’ll tell you this: I will fight any and every attempt by the Trump Administration to screw Arizona when it comes to our water future.
Over these last few weeks, I’ve been all over Arizona with people who gave everything they had to this election. I saw volunteers knocking doors in the heat, and yes even in the rain; I saw union members from all over the country pouring into Arizona because it’s all hands on deck in this fight for working families; and I saw neighbors talking to neighbors, coworkers talking to coworkers, and family talking to family about what’s at stake. Because so much is at stake.
I saw that same determination firsthand in the battlegrounds I visited across the country. As NewDem Action Fund Chair, we recruited the best Democrats to run in red districts from coast to coast. We got them through their primaries, and we raised millions. I campaigned in Iowa, Utah, Pennsylvania and more.
And let me tell you: people were ready for a change. Democrats took our message of cost, care, and corruption from coast to coast. And you know what?
Democrats have taken back the House of Representatives!!
I can’t wait to cast my vote for Hakeem Jeffries to be the next Speaker of the House.
Change is coming to Congress, and checks and balance are coming back to the United States of America.
To my congressional staff, the hardest working staff on Capitol Hill; to my campaign team, Ashton, Shelby, and Grace; to our canvassers, our volunteers, and our union family: thank you. Your hard work made this possible.
And to Nicole, Trevor, and Violet: I love you. Thank you for being by my side through it all.
I’m proud to have fought alongside Amish Shah, JoAnna Mendoza, Jonathan Nez, and their teams. For those still waiting on results, we will make sure every eligible vote is counted.
Now, let’s talk about the job ahead.
Donald Trump promised to lower costs. Instead, he slapped tariffs on the things families buy. His reckless war in Iran drove up gas prices. And he and Republicans cut Medicaid while giving tax breaks to billionaires.
All the while, he turned the White House into a money-making machine for his family.
Republicans in Congress had the power to stop him. They chose to go along.
Well, their days of giving Donald Trump a blank check are over.
We’re going to put votes on the floor to reverse his tariffs, restore the tax credits that help people afford health insurance, and reverse the Medicaid cuts that threaten their care.
We’ll vote to end his reckless war in Iran. And we’ll hold this administration accountable: demand the documents, require testimony, and follow the money wherever it leads.
That’s what you sent us to Washington to do. And we have to deliver.
Because there’s a parent trying to figure out how to pay for a child’s prescription. A senior looking at a grocery bill and wondering what to put back. A young person working hard and wondering if they’ll ever be able to afford a home.
They need a Congress that sees them, hears them, and fights for them.
Arizona, you gave us the chance. Now let’s get to work!
Thank you. God bless our troops in harm’s way, and God bless the United States of America.
