FUN FACTS

Tempe: Tempe was known as Hayden’s Ferry before it became Tempe, named for the Salt River crossing Charles Trumbull Hayden opened in 1871.

Mesa: Mesa hosts what organizers describe as the largest annual outdoor Easter pageant in the world, drawing more than 100,000 people a year.

Chandler: Chandler’s Ostrich Festival comes from the city’s early history of raising ostriches inside city limits.

Phoenix/Ahwatukee: Affectionately known to locals as “Tukee” or “The Tuke,” Ahwatukee’s name allegedly traces back to the Missouri Valley Siouan Crow language. It most likely means “land on the other side of the hill” or “flat land.”
